Besides going green, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now laying special focus on promoting Ayurveda with its herbal gardens, which will be coming up in major parks and open spaces across the city. More so, these herbal gardens will resemble the shape of human beings and will be called as ‘Herbal Man’. This initiative comes in the wake of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s instructions to the municipal corporation to develop herbal gardens.

“The aim is to create awareness among citizens about medicinal plants and their usage in our daily lives. There are many species which can be grown in homes and can help in improving the functioning of human organs and even cure ailments,” said V Krishna, Officer on Special Duty, Urban Forestry, MA&UD.The herbal gardens will be developed in the shape of human beings, and medicinal plants, which benefit each organ, will be planted at the exact spot where the organ is supposed to be located.

For instance, Brahmi and Saraswathi are widely regarded as good for brain and they will be planted at a place where the head of the ‘Herbal Man’ is located. There will be name boards and information disclosing the significance of the plants and their benefits.“To begin with, the first herbal garden will be coming up at Indira Park and Tank Bund. Similar gardens will be developed in major parks and at open spaces,” said Krishna.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s exclusive herbal garden near Sanjeevaiah Park will be launched on August 15. Spread over two acres, the garden was developed with a cost of Rs 1.4 crore and is equipped with 314 different varieties of medicinal plants. The park was to be launched a few months ago but was delayed due to the works being taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), said HMDA Commissioner T Chiranjeevulu.

For the convenience of visitors, sufficient parking, toilets and other amenities are being developed at the park. Wide variety of medicinal plants has been cultivated and information boards will be set up at every plant, explaining the medicinal importance and other aspects.
