HMDA is focusing on constructing skywalks to provide safe

After setting up Foot over Bridges (FOB) at different places in the city, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is now focusing on constructing skywalks to provide safe and comfortable option for pedestrians at different junctions. To this effect, HMDA has identified 23 locations across Hyderabad to take up construction of skywalks.

Unlike the conventional facilities, these skywalks will be constructed in different shapes and will be equipped with multiple staircases for the convenience of pedestrians to get down at desired road ends at the junctions. Among 23 locations, HMDA has identified Secunderabad Railway Station, Madina Junction, Dilsukhnagar junction as prime locations for constructing the skywalks.

The rest are JNTU Junction, Uppal, Paradise, Afzalgunj, Koti, Lakdikapul petrol pump, Ameerpet, Owaisi junction, Bowenpally junction, Chikalguda junction, BHEL junction, Jubilee Hills Checkpost, Moazamjahi Market, Miyapur T junction, Sangeeth Junction, RTC crossroads, Khairathabad, SR Nagar and ECIL junctions.

The objective is to make things easy for pedestrians. The State Government is focusing on developing more facilities for pedestrians across the city and as part of this initiative, skywalks are being planned at 23 locations, said an official from HMDA.All the identified locations are high traffic zones with few facilities, including pavements for pedestrians. State Government instructed HMDA to construct skywalks and accordingly these facilities are being planned, he said.

Focus will be on connecting bus and railway stations, Metro stations with the skywalks at different junctions to facilitate pedestrians get into the desired transportation mode.


The skywalks will be designed with adequate light and ventilation. There will be advertisement opportunities on the structures to generate additional revenue and the same can be used for operating and maintenance, he explained.HMDA is already working on construction of FOBs at IDPL Bus stop, Prashanth Nagar in Balanagar, Near Eat Street, Necklace Road, near Panama Godowns, Vanasthalipuram, Ushodaya Super Market, AS Rao Nagar and at IDA Uppal, new Modern Bakery, Uppal. Tenders have been floated to construct these FOBs in six months under Engineering Procurement and Construction mode. Depending on the location, each FOB will be constructed at a minimum cost of Rs.1.5 crore.
