Gandipet Lake will have one more tourist attraction as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has decided to construct a bird sanctuary in 18 acres under the Osman Sagar (Gandipet) beautification project.

The project has been taken up at the cost of Rs 100 crore. Besides, setting up walking track, cycling track, road formation, chain link mesh fencing, street lighting, shoreline strengthening and landscaping covering 25 kilometres, this has been an additional attraction added to the project. A team of HMDA officials are currently in Malaysia to study the project and develop it on par with Putrajaya KL Bird Park. Gandipet park will have around 2,000 birds of 150 species, and winter visit of flamingoes will be a natural advantage for the park.

The HMDA has decided to divide the park in to several zones like free-flight zones,  Hornbill Park (also free flight concept) and a zone where birds will be separated in cages, enclosures and mini-aviaries.

The HMDA official claimed that by allowing the birds to move around freely and by simulating their natural habitats and diet, birds have been able to breed naturally thus helping to ensure the survival and sustainability of their species.
